GSM 03.38

There are three different ways of texts and data in a GSM short message with a maximum user data of 1120 bits to encode:

  • Escape: Through the escape character ( ESC 0x1B ) is uniquely used the default character set extension for the display of the immediately following character.
  • Escape with Single Shift: An element in the User Data Header of the message can be selected instead of the default character set extension, an alternative character set extension.
  • Locking Shift: By a further element in the User Data Header of the message can be selected instead of the basic character set, an alternative character set.

7 bits

The character set extension tables for 7- bit messages are usually designed so that on devices that do not have these tables and therefore represent the character of the base table, as similar as possible looking results are generated, eg "e " instead of " € ".

There are single- shift character set extension tables for Turkish, Spanish, Portuguese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu.

There are locking -shift character set tables for Turkish, Portuguese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu.

The mechanisms Single Locking Shift and Shift can be combined.
