GSP Stadium

The GSP Stadium is a football stadium in the Cypriot capital Nicosia. The sports facility in Strovolos district is named after the association Gymnastikos Syllogos Pankipria ( German Pancypriot Gymnastics Association), abbreviated as GSP, named.

The three Cypriot Fußballerstligisten Olympiakos Nicosia, APOEL Nicosia and Omonia Nicosia play their home games in this stadium. It is the home stadium of the Cyprus national football team. The stadium holds 22,859 spectators and is the largest in Cyprus.

History

The foundation stone was laid in 1998, a year later, the opening match was on 6 October 1999 Omonia Nicosia and APOEL place between Nicosia, which ended 3-3. It is the only stadium in Cyprus, it meets the criteria of UEFA.

After the second Intifada in 2000, it took advantage of Israeli football clubs such as Hapoel Tel Aviv and Maccabi Haifa as the home stadium for some European games. In the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup 2001/ 02 Hapoel Tel Aviv played against AC Milan in the first leg in this stadium, which Hapoel won 1-0. All three home games of Maccabi Haifa in Group F of the UEFA Champions League 2002/ 03 were held in this stadium.

Due to the climatic conditions, some Olympic teams chose the stadium in preparation site for the Olympic Games 2004.

From 1902 to 1999 there was a stadium that was also called GSP Stadium in Nicosia city center. It took 12,000 spectators, was also the most important football stadium Cyprus and was demolished in 1999. Therefore, today's sports facility as Neo GSP ( German New GSP) is known.
