Guallatiri, Chile

Guallatiri, in front of Lago Chungará

The Guallatiri (also Guallatire ) is one of the most active volcanoes in the Andes and is located in the north of Chile, just a little of the Bolivian border, 155 kilometers east of Arica in the Lauca National Park. The stratovolcano reaches a height of about 6,071 meters above sea level, making it the Ojos del Salado after with 6,883 m the second highest active volcano in the world. The last eruption was in 1960.

The summit can ( crampons ) up a steep, partially snow covered slope and a subsequent ice ridge is relatively easy to climb ( to the police a permit must be obtained ). There is the possibility of an all-terrain vehicle (2000 cost the $ 120 ) to let go up to about 5,200 m, which reduces the ascent on a day tour. But this can only be recommended well -acclimatized climbers!
