Guan Ping

Guan Ping ( simplified:关 平, traditional:关 平, Pinyin: Guan Ping, † 219) was the eldest son of the Shu general Guan Yu and a general under Liu Bei.

Life

For historical sources is not much handed over Guan Ping's life, not even his stylized name has been handed down. Only his capture by the Wu forces with his father west of Maicheng (麦 城, southeast of present-day Dangyang, Hubei) in 219 and his subsequent execution by the hand of Lu Meng are secured.

In the history of the three kingdoms

In the historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Luo Guanzhong is mentioned in Chapter 28 that Guan Ping was adopted at the age of 17 years of Guan Yu because his biological father wished him a career on the side of the legendary general. Guan Yu took Guan Ping as his son, because he himself was at that time still without physical descendants.

Deification

Since the deification of Guan Yu's under the Sui Dynasty Guan Ping appeared often together with Zhou Cang (周仓) (sometimes with Wang Fu and Liao Hua ) on the side of the statue of his father in temples and shrines. Also on portraits appeared the three together often. Guan Ping's white illustrated face stands in stark contrast to Zhou Cangs pitch-black exterior.
