Guanabacoa

Guanabacoa is one of 15 municipios ( districts ) of the city of Havana, located in the eastern part of the city. The municipality is one of the oldest of Havana and was first mentioned in the 16th century. Guanabacoa is the same as for the Battle of Guanabacoa known, which took place as part of the Seven Years' War with Britain in the 18th century for the traditions of Santería.

History

The origins Guanabacoas are due to a law the King of Spain from 1512, in 1743 the town received its town charter. In 1762 the English were successfully fought by the city's residents with machetes. Guanabacoa was also home to a small group of indigenous peoples who were exiled in the 18th century from Florida. In 1895 Guanabacoa was involved in the Cuban War of Independence, many of the fighters Mambí were active in the city. The first Communist group was founded in 1923 in the city.

During the Cuban revolution in 1959 put the population Guanabacoas numerous fighters in a street battle in Havana.

Economy

The economy Guanabacoas is mainly dominated by the industry. In particular, the Cuban steel industry experienced their rise here until today metallurgy forming an economic focus of the municipios. Infrastructure

In Guanabacoa 264 family physicians are represented ( 2011). In the city there are three polyclinics as well as some specialty clinics and pharmacies. The city is home to a Roman Catholic church, which was built 1721-1748 and Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is called.

In 1964 also opened a city museum, which particularly deals with the history of the 18th and 19th centuries and informed about the Afro-Cuban culture in the municipality.
