Guanaja

Guanaja is an island of the Islas de la Bahia in the Caribbean. It is located about 100 km off the coast of Honduras, to the west is the neighboring island of Roatan. Guanaja are preceded by several small, lying on a coral cays. On the Cay Bonacca lives more than half of Guanaja. The island is about 20 km long and the highest elevation is 400 m high.

All over the island there are no roads, the traffic is therefore handled with boats.

The island was discovered by Christopher Columbus on 30 July 1502. The sailors went to Soldadao Beach on the island north of the country. He named it Isla de Pinos.

On the island the Caracol, descendants of living since 1830 immigrant, English-speaking immigrants who came from the Cayman Islands.

In 1998 the island by Hurricane Mitch has been greatly affected.

Scuba divers will love the large variety of corals around Guanaja. The crystal clear warm water and spectacular, colored walls, small canyons and caves complement the diving experience. One can regularly see large groupers, moray eels, turtles, rays, and in the spring months now and then a whale shark.
