Guaracha

Guaracha is a dance song - type, which developed in Cuba in the 18th century. The often ambiguous, satirical or salacious texts will be sung by the choir and the soloists and often improvised. The Guaracha was a long time music of marginalized social strata, until the mid- 20th century it was known to a wider audience. This was done by dance bands and popular composers such as Nico Saquito or Julio Gutierrez.

The pieces are mostly in 3/4-, 6/8- or 2/4-cycle and are in contrast to the Son usually faster and livelier. Among the interpreters of Guaracha include Felix Dima, Celia Cruz, Roberto Faz, Benny Moré, Pío Leyva, Roberto Colé, Benito de Jesus and Nico Saquito and Candita Batista.

In Andalusia the Guaracha influenced the Rumba flamenca (also called " rumba gitana "), see flamenco.

In addition to the Cuban Guaracha there in Puerto Rico an independent style of music of the same name, which has developed in the 1950s from Spanish roots.
