Guarda is located in the Serra da Estrela is the highest town ( 1056 m above sea level. NN ) Portugal. She is the eponymous capital of the district of Guarda. History

The Celtiberian Lusitanians lived here and resisted the Roman invaders until 139 BC, the lustianische Viriatus leader was killed by a trick of the Romans and broke down the resistance. After the collapse of Rome Guarda was part of the Western Goth, where it became a bishopric since the 6th century. After the invasion of the Moors in the 8th century Guarda came under Arab rule, and was left to decay. During the Reconquista, the high-altitude Guarda gained strategic importance for the first time. It received its first city charter in 1199, and became more significant with simultaneous resolution of the diocese of Idanha -a- Velha bishopric. Railway

The Guarda railway station is a stop on the Linha da Beira Alta and the Linha da Beira Baixa, and is approached by Intercidades, regional trains and other lines of Comboios de Portugal. With the Sud- Express Guarda is connected to the international railway network.

Highways
