Guarea thompsonii

Guarea thompsonii is a flowering plant in the family of the mahogany family ( Meliaceae ). In the home areas the trivial name "Black Guarea " or "Dark Bossé " used.

Description

Appearance and leaf

Guarea thompsonii grows as a evergreen tree. It grows slowly and reaches a trunk diameter ( DBH = diameter at breast height ) of about 2.7 meters in 200 years. Are formed buttress roots.

The alternate and spirally arranged on the branches leaves are divided into petiole and leaf blade. The 6-14 cm long petiole is slightly winged and grooved. The Blattrhachis is 8 to 30 cm long. The leaf blade is paired or unpaired pinnate with rarely three, usually four to eight pairs more or less opposite pinnate leaves. The stems of the lateral leaflets are 5-7 mm long and the Endfiederblattes about 3.5 cm long. The leaflets are at a length of 13-34 cm and a width of 4 to 11 cm oblong- elliptic to obovate -elliptic with wedge-shaped to slight asymmetric base and a blunt or short tapered at the top. Stipules absent.

Inflorescence and flower

Guarea thompsonii is dioecious getrenntgeschlechtig ( dioecious ). The pendant, racemose or Rispige inflorescence is up to 30 cm long. The fragrant, unisexual flowers are radial symmetry and four or fünfzählig. The four or five sepals are fused cup-shaped. The four or five petals are free. The eight or ten stamens are fused cup-shaped. The Upper constant ovary is 6-7 mm long.

Fruit and seeds

The case of a diameter of 3 to 4 cm, almost spherical capsule fruit opens with three to four flaps and usually contains one or two, rarely, up to four seeds. The have a length of about 3 cm and a width of about 1.5 cm bean-shaped to rounded - triangular seeds have a fleshy reddish- orange aril.

Distribution and threat

Guarea thompsonii is widespread in tropical Africa. It is found ( from west to east ) in Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The stock of Guarea thompsonii is threatened by logging into his home. The degree of hazard is classified in the IUCN Red List as Vulnerable = endangered ( in 1998).

Use

Guarea thompsonii is used as a timber for the production of furniture.
