Gudhjem (Danish, German: " Gods Home ", compare the place name Gudme ) is a town on the east coast of the Danish Baltic Sea island of Bornholm. On 1 January 2013 there lived 718 people.

History

Gudhjem is an old fishing village. Up to a major outbreak of the plague in the middle of the 17th century, the oldest port city on the island was also one of the largest towns. Here a large herring market was held in the Middle Ages merchants of the Hanseatic cities. Today Gudhjem is a popular tourist destination because of its idyllic location. Gudhjem belonged to 31 December 2002 on the commune Allinge - Gudhjem, which had an area of 154 km ².

Attractions in and around Gudhjem

  • On the small private initiative, housed in the former railway station building museum with changing art and natural history exhibits going back.
  • The cultural center of today's tourist village is the harbor with its fish-smoking. From there, go during the season excursion boats to the islands peas.
  • At the pond Grämyr and on the slopes of Salne Bugt north west of the town are standing stones, the so-called Hestestene ( German: horse stones).
  • The coastline is mostly steep; the granite rocks fall up to 22 meters deep ( Helligdoms Cliffs at Tejn ) into the sea.
  • Toward Tejn the monuments are in Troldskoven.
  • In Østerlars to Gudhjem is the Østerlars Kirke from the 11th century, one of the four typical Bornholm round churches. They were not only important for worship but also for the defense of the Middle Ages. The loopholes in the upper floor of the Church testify to this. The characteristic conical roof was added later.

From Gudhjem several boats run to the nearby island Christiansø. It marks the easternmost point of Denmark.

Gudhjem is located approximately two kilometers west of the 15th meridian, according to the Central European Time is calculated. In Denmark, it is therefore also called " Gudhjem Time".

Sol over Gudhjem ( German: "Sun over Gudhjem " ) is the name of a Smørrebrøds ( German: " bread and butter "), which is prepared with smoked herring, raw egg yolk, chives and radishes.
