Region

Guéchémé (also: Ghéshémé ) is a rural municipality in the Department Tibiri in Niger.

Geography

Guéchémé lies in the large landscape and Sudan to the southeast to the neighboring state of Nigeria. The neighboring communities in Niger are Tibiri the northwest, Douméga in the northeast, Caracara in the southwest and Karguibangou and Tombokoirey II in the Northwest. The municipality is divided into 48 administrative villages, 32 traditional villages, 116 hamlets and 15 stock. The main town of the country church is the administrative village Guéchémé.

History

The area of Guéchémé was from the 18th century, a small principality called Takassaba. It was dominated by Maouri, a subgroup of the Hausa. The founder of Takassaba was a Maouri called Babba. One of his successors was Kiassa, who reigned from 1798 to 1828. He was able to extend his territory to other villages, including Bana, Dioundiou and Yelou. But soon after his death, his empire fell apart again. In the 19th century there were in Takassaba changing places of residence. These included today's administrative villages Guéchémé and Bey -Bey, which is named after its founder Bey -Bey. From 1894 to 1917 Soumana was the ruler of Takassaba. He witnessed the arrival of French colonialists. France set up in 1934 a canton called Takassaba one. 1975 Guéchémé was determined to the capital of this canton. The rural community Guéchémé went out in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform from the Canton Takassaba / Guéchémé. Floods in 2008 238 inhabitants were classified as injured. Since 2011 part of the rural community not to Dogondoutchi Department, but for the newly created Department Tibiri.

Population

At the 2001 census Guéchémé had 88 083 inhabitants. For the year 2010 117.963 inhabitants was calculated. Guéchémé making it the most populous municipality in the region of Dosso and also the only one with more than 100,000 inhabitants.

Economy and infrastructure

The municipality is located in that narrow zone along the border with Nigeria, ranging from Tounouga in the west to the east Malawa and operated in irrigated crop production for cash crops. By Guéchémé the National Road 3, which connects the village with the neighboring communities Karguibangou and Tibiri runs.
