Guémar

Guémar (German Gemar ) is a commune with 1368 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the arrondissement of Ribeauvillé in the department of Haut-Rhin in the Alsace region. She is a member of the Association of Municipalities Ribeauvillé.

Location

Guémar is (14 km south) and Schlettstadt (10 km north) and about 6 km east of the canton capital Ribeauvillé in the Upper Rhine Plain between Colmar. Here the Autoroute A35 Cross (junction 20 - Guémar ) and the Département road D 106 between Ribeauvillé and Guémar the hamlet Ribeauvillé Gare is located. There the railway Strasbourg -Colmar SNCF runs.

History

The place was first mentioned as Ghermari 768.

While the membership of Alsace to the German Empire 1871-1918 wrote to the church Gemar - spoken to the local name sounds in both languages ​​almost identical. In 1885, Gemar had 1219 inhabitants and was part of the district Rappoltsweier ( Ribeauvillé).

Attractions

  • The church of Saint -Léger was built in 1741 in Baroque style. The tower, however, dates from the 14th century and is the only remnant of an older church building. The spire dates from 1772.
  • The Upper Gate, part of the medieval fortifications of the town, was built around 1400 and restored in the early 21st century. In August 2009, the work was completed.
