Guer

Guer is a French town with 6240 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Morbihan in the Brittany region. The Breton name of the municipality is Gwer - Porc'hoed. The city belongs to the municipality Association Communauté de Communes du Pays de Guer.

Geography

Guer located 41 kilometers southwest of Rennes and 7 kilometers north of the Forêt de la Bourdonnaie ( Forest of Bourdonnaie ). The rivers and Aff Oyon traverse the municipality. The city lies at the junction of the D772 and D773 roads department.

History

In Gallo -Roman period, Guer was at the junction of important Roman roads. A road ran from Angers ( Juliomagus ) to Carhaix ( Vorgium ), one of Rieux ( Duretia ) to Corseul ( Fanum Martis ) and Vannes ( Dariorigum ) to Rennes ( Condate ).

Guer is first mentioned in records in the 9th century, when the plebs Wern. Wern or vern is the Gallic word for " alder " (French Aulnaie ).

Part of the town is the village Coëtquidan, in which the military academy Saint- Cyr has been located since 1945.

Twinning

It is twinned with the Italian city Gravedona.

Culture and sights

A 300 m long stone row of standing stones from prehistoric times in Guer is now privately owned. The stones are made of slate.

In the hamlet of La Ville Boscher belonging to Guer, there is a gallery grave from prehistoric times, which also consists of shale.

The Chapel of Saint- Etienne dates from the Carolingian period and may have been built with materials and on a foundation of Gallo-Roman times. One of her window was enlarged in 1631. The buildings date back to the 9th century and is classified as a monument historique since 1971 ( historical monument ).

Museums

The Memorial Museum of Saint- Cyr Coëtquidan ( Musée du Souvenir des écoles militaires de Saint- Cyr- Coëtquidan ) in the Military School of Saint- Cyr shows collections that document the history of the officers of the end of the Ancien Regime to the present day.

The Museum of Agricultural Machinery ( Musée Agri - Auto) is in the center of Guer. It shows over 500 machines and tools, as well as 15 vehicles, which document the history of agriculture from 1850 to today. It is open on Sundays from May to November.

Economy

Major lines of business of Guérois are the breeding of cattle, pigs, horses and mink. There is a Cidre, which can also be visited.
