Guerra Junqueiro

Abilio Manuel de Guerra Junqueiro ( born September 15, 1850 in Freixo de Espada à Cinta, Alto Tras- os- Montes, † July 7, 1923 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese poet, satirist, diplomat and politician who at the end of 19. century and at the beginning of the 20th century was one of the most important Portuguese poets.

Life

Abilio de Guerra Junqueiro was born in a small town in the province of Trás -os- Montes. After abandoning the study of theology, he studied law in Coimbra until 1873 and joined various student connections. He also is one of the leaders of the so-called "School of Coimbra ", an association of writers who advocated a renewal of Portuguese culture and social life.

Politically, he was active: in the 80 years of the 19th century, he was several times for a year deputy of the Cortes, the Portuguese Parliament. 1911-1914 he was the Portuguese ambassador in Switzerland.

Above all, as a poet, he was perceived: his work includes strong nationalist tones, but also folk poems found in his work place. His most famous poem " A Patria " ( The Fatherland ) was created to express his disappointment at the British expansionism in Africa at the expense of Portugal.

The convinced atheist occurred shortly before his death in the Catholic Church.

Abílio de Guerra Junqueiro died in 1923 in Lisbon.
