Guglielmo Epifani

Guglielmo Epifani ( born March 24, 1950 in Rome ) is an Italian politician and former trade unionist. He was from 2002 to 2010 head of the left trade union CGIL and from May to December 2013 Chairman of the Social Democratic Partito Democratico (PD).

Life

Epifani grew up in Rome and Milan. After graduation in 1969, he studied philosophy at the University La Sapienza in Rome, in 1973, he completed his studies.

After graduating Epifani joined the Federation of Trade Unions CGIL and was for this also professionally active, including as director of the publishing of the union, Esi. In 1979, he was Deputy Secretary-General of the Department of the CGIL for printing and paper. From 1990 he was a member of the Secretariat ( the Board) of the CGIL, 1993, he was Deputy Secretary-General initially Bruno Trentin and from 1994 under Sergio Cofferati. This he solved in 2002 from the Secretary-General and held that post until 2010. Epifani was the first socialist at the head of the CGIL since its re-establishment in 1944.

Political career

Epifani was initially a member of the Partito Socialista Italiano, after their disintegration of the Democrats of the Sinistra and finally the Partito Democratico. On May 11, 2013 Epifani was elected by the Congress of the PD as successor to the retiring Pierluigi Bersani with 85.8 percent of the vote for Secretary ( Chairman ).

Since the parliamentary elections in Italy in 2013 Epifani is a member of the Chamber of Deputies, where it is Chairman of the Committee on Economic, Trade and Tourism.
