Guglielmo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua

Guglielmo Gonzaga ( born April 24, 1538 Mantua; † August 14, 1587 in Goito ) was the second son of the Duke Federico II Gonzaga. He succeeded his childless deceased brother Francesco III. Gonzaga in 1550 as the Duke of Mantua and Margrave of Montferrat. 1574 he was appointed Duke of Montferrat.

Biography

Guglielmo married on April 26, 1561 in Mantua Eleanor of Austria (* November 2, 1534; † August 5, 1594 ), a daughter of the Emperor Ferdinand I. Although he suffered from a curvature of the spine, it should have been a relatively happy marriage. The couple had three children:

  • Vincenzo I Gonzaga (1562-1612), Duke of Mantua and Montferrat from 1587, ∞ 1) in 1581, divorced in 1582, Margherita Farnese ( 1567-1643 ), daughter of Duke Alessandro Farnese ( 1545-1592 ) of Parma, ∞ 2) 1584 Eleonora de ' Medici ( 1566-1611 ), daughter of Grand Duke Francesco I of Tuscany;
  • Margherita ( Eleonora ) Gonzaga (* May 27, 1564; † January 6, 1618 ) ∞ February 24, 1579 Alfonso II d' Este ( 1533-1597 ), Duke of Ferrara;
  • Anna Caterina Gonzaga (* January 17, 1566; † August 3, 1621 as a nun ) ∞ May 14th, 1582 Ferdinand II (1529-1595 ), Archduke of Austria - Tyrol.
