Guido de Bres

Guido Bray, also known as Guy de Bres (* 1522 in Mons, † May 31, 1567 in Valenciennes ) was a Protestant reformer in the Netherlands, during the Renaissance period.

Life

Bray studied at the Université de Lausanne in 1548 and fled to England to escape persecution because of his Protestant convictions. 1552, he returned to the Continent, where he later preached in Liege and Ghent in Tournai and Valenciennes. His Calvinistic creed embossed Confession de foi the églises of the Pays Bas ( 1561) brought the authorities against him, especially as the work was very well received and has been repeatedly reprinted. Bray visited Brussels and Antwerp and tried to unify the different directions of Protestantism in the Netherlands. In August 1566 led his presence in Valenciennes to unrest among his supporters, which developed into open revolt later. Bray took over the spiritual leadership of the movement. When the city was found in March 1567, Bray was captured and hanged.
