Guildhall (London)

The Guildhall is a building complex in the City of London. It is located on the Basinghall Street, and filled several centuries the function of the town hall of the City. Currently, it houses state rooms of the administration of the city.

The Guild Hall houses the Museum Guildhall Art Gallery was founded in 1999.

History

In ancient times, was located at the site of the Guildhall, the largest amphitheater in the province of Britain. Some parts of the building are from the year 1411. The buildings were badly damaged in the Great Fire of London in 1666, but the medieval walls intact. In 1670 the interior work has been restored.

Many rooms and the characteristic front façade were created by George Dance the Younger 1772-1806, with only remained to this day, the front facade.

Renewed destruction took place because of the bombings in 1940. The reconstruction took place in the years 1953-1954 according to the plans of architect Giles Gilbert Scott.
