Guillaume Rondelet

Guillaume Rondelet, also Rondeletius, (* 1507 in Montpellier, † 1566 in Réalmont ) was a French naturalist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Rondelet ".

Life

Rondelet studied from 1525 Philosophy at the University of Paris. In 1529 he began the study of medicine at the university of his native city, where he became procurator in 1530. In 1530, he studied anatomy and surgery at Johann Guinter in Maringues, where he practiced as a doctor. After his return to Montpellier he was in 1537 a doctoral thesis MD, went to Florence in 1539 and in 1540 physician to the Cardinal of Tournon. He was appointed in 1545 professor at the Faculty of Medicine in Montpellier through its mediation.

Accompanied by the Cardinal, he traveled to Holland and Italy. His observations on the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Adriatic coast were the basis for his depictions of marine animals.

Later, students were Ulisse Aldrovandi Rondelet famous Carolus Clusius and. He corresponded with, among others, Jean and ileocecal Caspar, Conrad Gesner, Leonhard Rauwolf, Matthias de L' Obel, Jacques and Pierre Richer de Daléchamps Belleval.

Ehrentaxon

Charles Plumier named in his honor, the genus of the plant family Rubiaceae Rondeletia ( Rubiaceae ). Linnaeus later took the name.
