Guinea (Region)

Guinea is a historical term for the southern part of West Africa.

The name is derived differently. Reference is often made to the aginaw Berber expression which means " land of the blacks " and had come over the Portuguese Guinea than in European languages ; there is also evidence of derivation from the description of the historical kingdom of Ghana or for an origin from the Latin for genu "knee" as the name of the arc of the African coastline.

As up to 500 km wide and over 6,000 km long crescent -like strips the Guinea region stretches along the Atlantic coast from Senegal in West Africa over parts of central Africa to Angola in southwest Africa. The area between Senegal and Cameroon is called Upper Guinea, the rest to Angola Lower Guinea.

While Upper Guinea, which is determined by the Upper Guinea threshold, has a long coastline, the coast of Lower Guinea, which is determined by the low- threshold Guinea, rather narrow indented; Both sub-regions have tropical rainforests, and savannas.
