Guinn Smith

Owen Guinn Smith ( born 2 May 1920 in McKinney, Texas, † January 20, 2004 in San Francisco) was an American track and field athlete.

Born in Texas Smith went with his parents as a child to California and later studied history at Berkeley. When he began to study, he was still high jumper. Since the university athletics team but already had a good high jump team, he moved to the pole vault. In 1941, he won the U.S. university championships. After graduating, he fought as a pilot in World War II. In 1947, he was U.S. champion in the pole vault and launched in 1948 at the Olympic Games in London. Here he became Olympic champion with a last attempt skipped height of 4.30 m.
