The Guirakuckuck ( Guira guira ) belongs to the cuckoo birds and is native to eastern South America. He is the only member of the genus Guira.

Features

The Guirakuckuck is up to 40 cm long and reaches a body weight of about 140 g The wings are short and rounded.

Habitat and behavior

The Guirakuckuck lives in Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina, where it inhabits grasslands with scattered trees. The bird lives in groups that huddled together tightly resting in tree branches. Sometimes the animals maintain each other's feathers. The Guirakuckuck studied mostly on the ground, sometimes in troops on trees for food. The diet consists of insects, frogs, eggs and nestlings.

Breeding behavior

The breeding season is from August to November in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina in November and December. The eggs are laid in a group often nest, a primitive structure of twigs, which will be built in trees. It happens that other eggs will be thrown out of the nest. The young are reared collectively. Sometimes the eggs are laid in nests of other birds. Incubation period is 10 to 15 days.
