Gukovo

Gukowo (Russian Гуково ) is a Russian city in Rostov Oblast Federal District Southern Federal District with 67 278 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the north- west of the oblast, about 100 km as the crow north of the capital city of Rostov -on-Don, near the Ukrainian border and about 15 km west of the railway line Rostov - Moscow.

History

The settlement was founded in 1878 as a center of farms and farms in the surrounding area and was soon the center of coal mining in this area. The place has grown with the coal mining industry, so the suburbs are several kilometers away from the center today. 1955 Gukowo received its town charter.
