Guksi

Guksi (or kuksa Finnish, Swedish Kåsa ) is a cup that is traditionally carved from the seeds in northern Scandinavia from a burl.

Establishing and maintaining

The tuber that grows after an injury on the trunk of the birch is first brought roughly into shape and then carefully dried to avoid cracks and fissures. Then it is shaped according to local tradition. From burl molded cups usually hold more than cups from conventional birch. Originally, the cups were used in Arctic regions as a personal drinking vessel. A Guksi carefully produced normally holds a lifetime.

Guksi be rinsed with clear water and dried with a cloth. A Tradition of any cleaning agents are used.

Modern Guksi

Nowadays you will find outside of northern Scandinavia barely Guksi. This is partly because that burl hardly plays a role in modern forestry. In addition, the use of glass, ceramics and metal have the craftsmanship of a Guksi displaced.
