The Gulf of Fonseca (Spanish: Golfo de Fonseca ) is a bay in Central America.

The Gulf is bordered by the countries of El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua. It covers an area of ​​3200 km ². The largest islands in the Gulf of Fonseca are Isla Zacate Grande and El Tigre, which together with the smaller islands of the community Amapala.

The three neighboring countries were involved in lengthy disputes over the rights to the Gulf and the islands therein. Only in 1992 could the dispute be resolved by a decision of the International Court of Justice. The control of the Gulf was awarded the three countries equally. The islands Meanguera and Meanguerita were El Salvador, the island of El Tigre Honduras awarded.
