Gulf of Honduras

The Gulf or Bay of Honduras is a large bay in the Caribbean and is bounded by the coasts of Belize, Honduras and Guatemala. The western boundary forms a 200 km long line between Dangriga in Belize and La Ceiba in Honduras.

Many rivers flow into the Gulf of Central America; among other things, the Motagua and the Ulua. The Lago de Izabal in Guatemala is connected through the canyon of the Río Dulce at the Gulf.

In the Gulf of Honduras are a large number of small islands ( cays ) and reefs which are together referred to as the Pelican Cays. Many anglers visit the Gulf of Honduras to catch marlin which are common there. In particular, Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye are popular destinations for tourist excursions.

Again and again form in the Gulf of Honduras hurricanes have partially devastating effects - as taught, for example, Hurricane Hattie in 1961 to great damage in Belize.
