The Golfe du Lion to German as " Gulf of Lions ", is a bay on the French Mediterranean coast, located between the Spanish Cape Creus ( Cape Creus in Cadaqués ) and extends the French city of Toulon. The coasts are among the regions of Languedoc -Roussillon and (partially) Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.
The name has, unlike the German name suggests, nothing to do with the French word for lion ( lion ), but is derived from the name of the Celtic god Lugh, who as a namesake for Lyon ( Lugdunum ), Laon, and perhaps for the Dutch city of Leiden ( Lugdunum Batavorum ) holds. From Lugdunum was Loudon and then Lion.
Most of the coast is flat; There are lagoons and salt marshes, especially in the area of the Camargue. A characteristic feature of the coastal area is the cold and harsh case Mistral wind.
