Gulkana River

BW

The Gulkana River is a 95 km long river in southern Alaska (USA).

It rises in the Alaska Range north of Paxson, flows through two large lakes, the Summit and Paxson Lake, and flows south from Gulkana in the Copper River. The Richardson Highway and the Trans - Alaska Pipeline run over long distances parallel to the river.

The name " Gulkana " has its origin in the name of the original inhabitants of the river. Oscar Rohn wrote the name in 1899 as " Kulkana ". The present spelling was introduced by WR Abercrombie, a captain in the United States Army. Henry Tureman Allen had reported in 1885 the term " Tonkina ".

Some parts of the Gulkana River in 1980 reported by the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act as a National Wild and Scenic River under the administration of the Bureau of Land Management.
