Gulu District

Gulu is a district in northern Uganda with the eponymous capital of Gulu. He is one of three districts, which together represent the historical homeland of the Acholi ethnic group, known as the Acholi. The population was 2002 479.496, of which 90 % of the farming life.

History

Gulu is a main battle area of the rebel Lord's Resistance Army under Joseph Kony born there.

27 km north of the capital lies the fort, founded in 1872 by Samuel Baker Patiko, which was later used by Emin Pasha.

Climate

Gulu came in April 2000 from a long drought period with annual rainfall of 0-27 mm. The Decade 2000 - 2009, however, brought it under account of the years 2003/2004 to a yearly average of 462.52 mm of rain. These were 21.47 mm less than in the period 1973 to 1978, where, despite the drought period '73 / '74 or 483.99 mm were booked. The peak of 1977 with 1145.49 mm of rain was not reached again. The heaviest downpour since records began in 1957 fell on 27 May 2005 with 201.68 mm. The low points of 2008 and 2009, 258.83 mm and 156.46 mm indicate that only one in Gulu irrigated agriculture can guarantee significant returns. The first quarter of the year took place in the years 2000 - 2009 mostly dry or slightly moistened, whereas the bulk of the precipitation was achieved times in the second, third or fourth quarter.

Culture and Education

The district has 234 primary schools and 29 secondary schools. In Gulu, the University of Gulu, in addition there are three teachers' colleges.

The most prominent Acholi, who comes from near Gulu, Uganda 's most famous writer Okot p'Bitek.

Health

In October 2000 there was an outbreak in Gulu Ebola virus in which died a little more than 400 infected about 200. Furthermore suffers Gulu, as large parts of Africa, including the AIDS epidemic. 11.9 % of the inhabitants are infected with the HIV virus.

There are four hospitals, 28 health centers and 75 pharmacies.

Structure

The district is located 332 km north of Kampala and consists of the four districts Kilak, Achwa, Omoro and Nwoya and the city district of Gulu. These are broken down further into 19 sub-districts, 121 municipalities and 686 local congregations. Gulu has borders with seven other districts and the Sudan.

Traffic

By Gulu the north line of the Uganda Railway runs. It has a total of 1015 km roads.
