Gunnar Sauer

Gunnar Sauer ( born June 11, 1964 in Cuxhaven ) is a former German football player.

In the Bundesliga he played from 1984 to 1996 for Werder Bremen. He was also active in the 2nd Bundesliga for Hertha BSC and VfB Leipzig. Overall, he brought it to 134 Bundesliga games (8 goals) and 20 second division games.

Sauer was in the squad of the team for the European Football Championship 1988 in Germany. In the Summer Olympics 1988, he won with the German team bronze.

As a technically -shod defender Sauer could fill the role of libero based on the play by Franz Beckenbauer; but due to a variety of injuries, he could never achieve its potential.
