Günter Siegmund

Günter Siegmund ( born December 19, 1936 in Kuestrin ) is a former German amateur boxer in the heavyweight division ( 81 kg). He each won a bronze medal at the 1960 Olympic Games and the European Championships in 1961.

Boxing career

Günter Siegmund trained at ASK Vorwärts Berlin and in 1960 and 1961 DDR - heavyweight champion. 1957, 1959 and 1963, he reached the third place, respectively.

In the 1st International GDR Army Championships in September 1958, he failed only in the semifinals to Andrei Abramov from the Soviet Union and thus won the bronze medal.

At the European Championships in 1959 in Lucerne, he lost to the later Bronze medalist Władysław Jędrzejewski from Poland. The 14th European Championships in Belgrade in 1961, he won the bronze medal. Due to a points victory against the British Billy Walker, he was drafted into the semifinals, where he defeated the Italians Benito Penna.

Another bronze medal he won at the 17th Summer Olympic Games in Rome in 1960, where he managed the Swiss Max Bösiger ko struck and the two-time Olympian Romanian Vasile Mariuţan defeated 5-0 on points, before he lost on points 1:4 in the semifinal against South African Daan Bekker.
