The steep gaff - rigging is a precursor of Bermuda or high rigging.

In contrast to classic gaff rig the gaff rises steeply at Steilgaffelrigg upwards and thus offers the wind a longer leading edge. Representative of this Takelungsart are eg older H dinghies and BM dinghies.

One problem was the twisting of cotton sailcloth. Remedy should form incorporated battens. Only with the invention of the plastic sail this problem was solved, but the steep gaff rigging was replaced at this time already by the modern Marconi or high rigging.
