Gurktal Alps

The Gurktaler Alps are a mountain range in the central Alps in Austria south of the Mur between Katschberg or Liesertal in the west and Neumarkt saddle to the east. In the south they are bounded by the river Drava. The highest peak is the Styrian Eisenhut ( 2441 m) in the Nock Mountains, the most important sub-group. In the Gurktaler Alps are Wörthersee, Lake Millstätter Ossiach, Afritzer, Brennsee Turrachersee and Schwarzsee on Mirnock in the southern Nockbergeregion and Falkertsee in the municipality of Reichenau.

Structure

The Gurktaler Alps can be divided into five groups:

  • The Nock between Liesertal and Flattnitz height. Highest peaks are Eisenhut ( 2441 m ) and the Grand Rosennock ( 2440 m).
  • The Metnitzer mountains lie between Mur and Metnitztal. The highest peak is the Goldachnock ( 2171 m).
  • The Mödringbergzug between Metnitz and Gurktal. The highest elevation form the corners of villages (1726 m)
  • The Wimitzer mountains lie between Gurk and Glantal and flows through the Wimitz. The highest peaks are snow mountain farmer and the Hocheck (each 1338 m)

The southern end of the Gurktaler Alps forms the Klagenfurt basin. Here are seven other smaller mountain ranges:

  • Magdalen mountain ( lip Kogel, 1079 m)
  • Ossiacher Tauern ( Taubenbühel 1069 m)
  • Glantaler Bergland (Ulrich mountain, 1022 m)
  • Sattnitz (dance floor, 929 m)
  • Feldkirchen- Moosburg hills (Freudenberg, 817 m)
  • St. Veit hills (Book Mountain, 808 m)
  • Maria Saal hills ( Maria Saal mountain, 746 m)

Economy and Tourism

Due to the gentle landscape previously much Serviced operated. The mining industry (iron, see: Eisenhut and silver) was for centuries, but was only in Radenthein productive ( magnesite manufactured by RHI AG).

Today, tourism is the most important economic sector. The valleys of the Alps Gurktaler are well developed through the summer and especially to encourage winter tourism. The most prominent tourist town is Bad Kleinkirchheim, next Turracherhöhe (municipalities Predlitz -Turrach and Reichenau ), Falkert (municipality of Reichenau ) and Inner Krems ( Krems community in Carinthia), Flattnitz, Afritz and Katschberg (municipality Rennweg am Katschberg ). The largest ski areas in the Nock Mountains are Katschberg -Aineck, Inner Krems- Schönfeld- Karneralm, Turracherhöhe and Gerlitze and Kreischberg in the Metnitzer mountains.

The Nock Mountains region is also known for its mineral springs. The Karlbad inns along the route is considered the oldest farmer spa in Austria. The way how the baths are made ​​( spring water and hot stones), has remained unchanged since the 17th century. Due to the remote location, there is also no electricity. The name of the bath can be traced back to the small Kar ( = Karl).

Conservation

Since the 1980s, the Nockalmstraße winds (up to 2049 m above sea level. A. ) as a scenic road from Gurktal in the Inner Krems. This area was later declared a National Park Nock. In the northeast, between Malmesbury and the Neumarkt saddle, there is the natural park Grebenzen.
