Gurnigel Pass

The Gurnigel is a distinctive range of hills and a passport in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

The Hill

The visible from afar top Gurnigel ( 1'548 m above sea level. M. ) carries one of the oldest names of the region, which is attributed to the Latin corniculum " croissant ". As a viewpoint Gurnigel was already in the 19th century at the spa guests of Gurnigelbades popular, and various artists drew panoramas from there. The upper Gurnigel is only accessible on foot in about half an hour from the pass road at the mountain lodge ( 1,594 m) via Gurnigelberghütte ( 1,535 m).

Further surveys of the hill chain are the Selibüel ( 1,750 m) and the Zigerhubel ( 1,620 m). To the north- west lowers the range of hills and the black water, to the southeast to Gürbe. In the south (M. 1'584 m above sea level. ) The Wasserscheidi forms the transition to Stockhornkette. The Gurnigel is part of the Gantrisch region.

The Gurnigel consists of schistose flysch.

The Pass

Spanning the range of hills road begins in the hamlet Dürrbach (828 m) at Riggisberg. About halfway up is that once widely known hotel Gurnigelbad ( 1,155 m). This part of the road is the oldest and expanded in 1872 on the initiative of the former hotel owner Johann Jakob Hauser.

In the 1920s, the continued expansion over Berghaus ( 1,594 m), Taurus hut was ( pass 1'608 m ) and the so -called Wasserscheidi ( 1'584 m) Gantrischhütte to the Lower ( 1,510 m). A little below the lower Gantrischhütte the road towards Schwefelbergbad branched ( 1'389 m) and Sanger bottom ( 977 m) on the one hand and the direction Schwarzenbühl ( 1'491 m ) on the other. The route to the Schwarzenbühl is a pronounced high road.

The Gurnigel is a year round destination. The " Töfftreff " in the lower Gantrischhütte ( respectively from the first Tuesday of June to last a month each September, 18.00 clock ) attracts motorcycle driving an end, and every two years the hotel Gurnigelbad the Beo Bike Week conducted an international motorcycle rallies.

In winter, the Wasserscheidi and the hotel Gurnigelbad ever a ski lift in operation. Throughout the region, cross-country trails are groomed. Annually perform amateur astronomers on the pass through one or more celestial observation nights.

On the Wasserscheidi the border between the municipalities Riggisberg, Rüeggisberg ( exclave ) and Rüschegg the Swiss Army maintains various tank firing ranges, which sometimes leads to conflicts with tourism.

Hillclimb Gurnigel

In September of each mountain race Gurnigel takes place. The races were conducted from 1910 to 1931 on the former gravel road and 1968 recorded on the now paved route again. The race begins in Dürrbach ( Lage46.7786997.444135 ) and ends at the Gurnigelbad ( Lage46.7620547.442913 ). We start in different categories for cars and motorcycles. The event attracts up to 20,000 spectators. The fastest ever time traveled by 1'47, 51 minutes, gives an average speed of 125.669 km / h on the 3,734 m long winding circuit with a height difference of 314 m; the track record from the year 2006 were prepared by Eric Berguerand on a Lola T96, a free racing car formula group E2.

Le Gurnigel

Le Gurnigel is the French name for the area. That name by the way also a farm estate on the northern slope of Mont d'Amin in the canton of Neuchatel.
