Gush Katif

Gush Katif (Hebrew גוש קטיף ) was a block of sixteen Jewish settlements in the southern Gaza Strip. The block bordered on the south by the Palestinian town of Rafah refugee camp and Tall as -Sultan, on the east by Khan Yunis, in the north on agricultural area and on the west by an unpopulated stretch of beach. The block cut the Palestinian residents of the southern Gaza Strip on access to the sea. A special feature was the city of Al Mawasi. This Palestinian city was an exclave within the Jewish settlement blocs. Its inhabitants were able to leave their own city only at certain times and lived according to reports of the human rights organization B'Tselem like prisoners

As part of the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, the settlements were completely cleared in August 2005; the Israeli army began after the evacuation of the settlements immediately with the demolition of the houses. The cleared areas were handed over to the following months to the Palestinians.
