Gustaaf Joos

Cardinal Gustaaf Joos ( born July 5, 1923 in Sint -Niklaas, Belgium, † 2 November 2004 Landskouter in East Flanders ) was a Belgian theologian.

Life

Joos was ordained a priest in 1946 in Ghent. He studied in Rome and obtained a doctorate in canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University from. During his time in the Belgian College he became friends with the also living there Karol Józef Wojtyła Polish priest, who later became Pope John Paul II, who worked on his dissertation. With him he remained all his life long friendship connected. From 1970 until his death he was pastor of Landskouter.

Joos was among other things a professor of moral theology and canon law in Ghent. In his diocese Joos was head of the ecclesiastical court. Since October 7, 2003, he was Titular Archbishop of Ypres for 14 days. On October 11, 2003, he was ordained in Ghent by Arthur Luysterman bishop. His motto was: Diliges me. He was raised surprisingly the Consistory on 21 October 2003 cardinal deacon with the titular church of San Pier Damiani ai Monti di San Paolo. At the time of his Cardinal Gustaaf Joos survey was no longer eligible to vote, as he has already completed his 80th year.

The cardinal died at home. The funeral took place on 12 November 2004.
