Gustav Adolf Stave Church

The Gustav Adolf Stave Church is a stave church in Goslar- Clausthal (Harz ).

The building is a free replica of the stave church Borgund. Some adaptations were needed to enable the Church 350 seats can be accommodated. The construction of the church began in 1907, their consecration took place on 28 June 1908.

History

Until the beginning of the 20th century, the top floor of the former school building was located near the present-day Hindenburgplatz as worship space. With growing tourism this room was too small, especially during the summer months.

Therefore, the Konsistorialarchitekt Karl Mohrmann was commissioned from Hannover to design a separate church building for cock clover. Mohrmann had seen the local stave churches during a study trip to Norway and signed some of them. He struck out in front to build a stave church in Hahnenklee, citing, among other things, that at times the Christianization of Germany throughout northern Germany stave churches have been and this style was thus also have been at home here.

Thus arose in the years 1907 to 1908 Hahnenkleer craftsmen and from harvested on the north side of the mountain goat spruce stave church Clausthal. Although strictly speaking it rather is a replica of an " imitation " of the real, over 800 years old stave churches, wore her unusual appearance quickly to a high level of awareness. The Norwegian Stave Churches are very dark in contrast to stave Clausthal much smaller (about 50 seats) and the absence of larger windows inside.

At first you could not unplug the altar room with movable walls and use it as a winter church.

The Stave Church Clausthal was extensively renovated several times, with the view of the facade has changed. The last, very extensive refurbishment was carried out in the years 2000 to 2006.

Organ

The equipment of the stave church with an organ was difficult due to the special climatic conditions in the resin and in the wooden church. Initially, only a harmonium was available. Mid-1950s, was installed an electro-pneumatic cone chests organ consisting of 1600 pipes and 26 registers. This was the mid-1980s expanded, as they are often out of tune and the maintenance was expensive.

After some years had resorted to an electronic organ was installed in 1994 by the company Goll a new organ, which has 27 stops on two manuals and pedal and is provided with a mechanical play and stop action. The organ pipes are hidden above the chancel behind a snake -shaped grid; the console is at the level of the gallery left of the chancel.

Others

Since the "real" stave churches have emerged in the time of Christianity, they still contain many pagan symbols such as scorpion or snake symbols. Also in Clausthal these are plenty to be found.

In particular, in the 1960s and 1970s, the stave church was a very popular wedding church. In record years there 300 weddings per year were held.

The location of the church was a compromise between the two hamlets cock clover and meadow Bock: The church was placed on the outskirts of Clausthal, the buck meadow was the closest. In the 1950s the school was built 200 meters south of similar " central " location.
