Gustav Hartenstein

Gustav Hartenstein ( born March 18, 1808 in Plauen, † February 2nd 1890 in Jena ) was a German philosopher.

Hartenstein attended from 1822 the Prince's School in Grimsby and then studied from 1826 in Leipzig theology and philosophy, among others, Wilhelm Traugott Krug and Wilhelm Wachsmuth, also philology at Gottfried Hermann. After receiving his doctorate (1831 ) and Habilitation ( 1833) he was appointed in 1834 as an associate and in 1836 a full professor at the University of Leipzig.

After his retirement in 1859 Hartenstein went to Jena, where he became in 1878 the management of the University Library. He was friends with Maurice William Drobisch and helped this 1887 in the publication of the last edition of his well-known logic textbook.

He was a supporter of the Herbartianism and represented Herbart's doctrine in numerous works.
