Gustav Karpeles

Gustav Karpeles ( born November 11, 1848 in Eiwanowitz in Hanna, Moravia, † July 21, 1909 in Nauheim ) was a literary historian, writer, critic and Jewish publicist.

Life

He wrote several books about Heinrich Heine and gave 1885, the popular history of Jewish literature out.

Karpeles visited Mikulov and Olomouc high school, enrolled in 1867 as a student of theology at the University of Breslau, but very soon turned to literary studies. After university studies Karpeles spent a year in London, returned to Germany and in 1870 in Berlin and co-founder, together with Samuel Enoch, editor of the weekly paper Jewish press. His cousin was the singer Sophie King. From 1873 to 1877 he was features editor of the newspaper Breslauer and took over in 1878 the editors of Westermann's Monatshefte, which he headed until 1883. As editor of the popular magazine, he also corresponded with Theodor Fontane, for whose work he championed. From 1890 until his death he was finally editor and publisher of the Allgemeine Zeitung of Judaism that existed from 1837 to 1922, edited by Ludwig Philippson, followed by Gustav Karpeles, Ludwig Geiger, Albert Katz; under Karpeles ' aegis Eastern Jewish themes were taken inside with in the magazine and stopped focusing on Western and Central Europe.

In 1893 he was co-founder of the Association of Clubs for Jewish History and Literature ( the association was also since 1898, the yearbook for Jewish history and literature out; 1898-1920 appeared the messages from the reference agency for Jewish History and Literature in Germany ).

As Heine- researcher, he published in 1869 a biography of Heine Heine's works issued in 1884 and in 1888 wrote the book " Heinrich Heine and his contemporaries ". But also about Ludwig Borne and Nikolaus Lenau, he wrote biographical work and wrote in 1889 a great literary essay on Friedrich Spielhagen.

Karpeles died on July 21, 1909 in Bad Nauheim in a heartbeat. His grave is located in the Jewish Cemetery in Berlin- Weissensee.
