Gustav Merkel

Gustav Adolf Merkel ( born November 12, 1827 in Oberoderwitz, Upper Lusatia, † October 30, 1885 in Dresden ) was a German organist, composer and music teacher. His organ compositions were in the second half of the 19th century to the most frequently played works.

Life

As the son of a teacher and organist Merkel received at Ernst Julius Otto and Johann Schneider lessons in counterpoint and organ playing. Some years, he held a teaching position at the Dresden School and became organist at the Dresden Orphanage Church and Church of the Cross. In 1864 he was court organist at the Catholic Hofkirche in Dresden. From 1861 he was a teacher at the Royal Conservatory of Music. From 1867 to 1873 he was conductor of the Dreyssigschen Singing Academy.

Merkel made a name for himself as a virtuoso organist and composer of organ music. He also served as teacher of the Dresden choir conductor and composer Hugo Richard recently. On December 12, 1857, he was ( as in the past thirty Anton ) " The Golden Apple" was added to the lodges Association. In March 1866 he was master of the chair.
