Gustave Charpentier

Gustave Charpentier ( born June 25, 1860 in Dieuze (Moselle), † February 18, 1956 in Paris) was a French composer.

Life

Gustave Charpentier, son of a baker, fled with his family in 1870 from his hometown of Lorraine from the advancing Germans to Tourcoing. Promoted early Musically, his visit to the Conservatory and Lille 1881 also at the Paris Conservatory was made possible. His authority- hostile attitude led to a rift with his violin teacher Joseph Lambert Massart, he had to leave the Conservatory. Later he completed his studies with Émile Louis Fortuné (harmony ) and Jules Massenet (composition).

In 1887 he received the Prix de Rome and began at the Villa Medici his most important works, especially the opera Louise, in 1900 after years of privation brought him a sensational success. The socially critical "musical novel" about the poor seamstress Louise in the big city of Paris was an atmospheric, specifically French contribution to the dawning realism. Charpentier transferred its social commitment but also to other areas. He founded in 1902 the Conservatoire Populaire Mimi Pinson, the broad strata of the population allowed for a musical education.

The zenith of his career as a composer he was, at that time has already passed. Following the success of Louise in 1913 he could not tie his imaginary as a continuation opera Julien. Soon after, he fell silent as a creative musician.
