Gustave Roth

Gustave Roth ( born March 12, 1909 in Antwerp, † 14 September 1982) was a Belgian boxer. He was world champion and European champion professional boxer.

Career

Gustave Roth was already with 18 years of professional boxers. He played his first match in Brussels against his fellow countryman Georges Covent he won on points after six rounds. Earlier in his career he did not even weighed 70 kg and punched in the light welterweight or. After a series of battles structure he won in 1929 against the German champions in lightweight Fritz Ensel by KO in the 4th round. He also defeated his strong compatriots Eduard Baudry and Leo Darton and got so on 9 September 1929, the opportunity in Charleroi against Alf Genon at the European Championship welterweight to fight. Gustave Roth won that fight over 15 rounds on points and had thus become European champion at age 20.

In the next few years he defended that title twelve times with success. Particularly noteworthy are his point victories over the German master Gustav Eder on February 3, 1930 in Frankfurt am Main on 30 August 1931 in Berlin as well as the Dutch hub Huizenaar on 18 November 1931 in Brussels. He had, however, in the fight against the Czechs Franta Kekolny, against whom he was in Prague on 16 March 1931 a lucky draw lucky.

No luck brought him his thirteenth title defense which took place in Brussels on 26 October 1932. He fought there against his compatriot Adrien Anneet and had to be disqualified in the sixth round due to head bumping. 1933 defeated Gustave Roth et al again two top German boxer. He had meanwhile moved up to the middleweight and struck on 25 February 1933, Brussels Hein Domgörgen and on 16 May 1933, Antwerp Gypsy Trollmann each on points. On June 24, 1933 Gustave Roth was in Bucharest with a points victory over the Romanians Gheorghe Axioti new European champion at middleweight.

On March 17, 1934 Gustave Roth defended this title in Brussels successfully against the German Erich Seelig by a points victory over 15 rounds. On May 3, 1934, came to Paris to fight against the French middleweight champion Marcel Thil. It related to the European Championship title in the middleweight and light heavyweight as well as for the world championship title of the IBU at middleweight. The IBU was a European competition Federation for World Boxing Association, which was founded in 1913 by European Boxverbänden because the European boxers felt towards the American disadvantage. The world champion of the IBU but were not recognized in the United States, the mecca of professional boxing and were therefore greatly diminished in importance. Marcel Thil won that fight after 15 rounds by points.

On April 24, 1935 Gustave Roth won in Oostende against the young Karel Sys Belgian middleweight championship and defeated on September 1, 1936 in Vienna, the Austrian champion in the light heavyweight division Heinz Lazek on points. On October 29, 1936, he then fought in Berlin to the now vacant again win the European Championship and the IBU World Champion in the light heavyweight division against Adolf Witt. Gustave Roth won over 15 rounds on points and was World and European champion in the light heavyweight division.

He defended this title four times then successfully. On 24 March 1937 in Brussels by a points victory over Preciso Merlo from Italy, on 1 May 1937 in Antwerp by a point victory over Sweden John Andersson (Boxer), on 1 December 1937 in Brussels by a draw against Karel Sys and the January 21, 1938 in Berlin by a draw against Cologne Jupp Besselmann. On March 25, 1938, he then lost both titles in Berlin at the dreaded KO Bat Adolf Heuser. Gustave Roth also had to capitulate prematurely against Heuser. He was unable to fight in the 7th round.

After Gustave Roth fought until 1945 on. But he got no more chance of getting back to boxing to an international title. But should be mentioned two fights against Karel Sys. On July 2, 1941 Gustave Roth lost in Brussels for the first time against Karel Sys in the battle for the Belgian championship in the heavyweight division and on 25 May 1942, he won via Sys in Antwerp on points and was again Belgian champion in the heavyweight division. His last battle played Gustave Roth on 7 February 1945 in Brussels and the Belgian champion in the light heavyweight pole Goffaux. This fight ended in a draw.

Gustave Roth joined then back from boxing. He had an extremely successful career. In 137 battles that he denied he had only eleven lost. Only a very few top boxers in the world and in Europe can look back on such a good result.
