Gustave Singier

Gustave Singier ( born February 11, 1909 in Comines, Belgium, † 10 May 1984 in Paris) was a Belgian painter. He is one of the representatives of the abstract painting of the " Ecole de Paris".

Biography

Gustave Singier grew up in a small Flemish village. In 1919 his family moved to Paris. Singier began at age 14 with his painting.

From 1923 to 1926 he visited he attended classes at the Ecole Boulle in Paris. He was trained there in the scenic realization of representations of nature and the copy of works by renowned artists.

From 1927 to 1936 he worked as a draftsman for various companies and agencies in Paris.

As of the year from 1936 he began exhibiting his works at the Paris Salon and was able to live from then on from his painting. Soon began galleries throughout France to show his works.

In 1939 he met the painter Alfred Manessier, Elvire Jan and Jean Le Moal know. From this acquaintance a long-standing friendship should be.

In 1941, Singier participated in the exhibition " Vingt jeunes de tradition française peintres " which was organized by Jean Bazaine. It was the first exhibition of avant-garde painting in Paris during the German occupation of France.

From 1951 to 1954 he taught at the Académie Ranson. After this time, his works were exhibited in biennials and exhibitions throughout Europe, for example in 1957 at the Kestner -Gesellschaft in Hannover. Gustave Singier also participated in the documenta 1 in 1955, and after, 1959, the documenta II in Kassel.

In the 60s he founded together with other artists and patrons of the art world in Paris the "Salon de la jeune peinture indépendante " to provide a forum for their art with the aim of young painters and painters.

Work

The images Singiers often characterized by monochrome surfaces, which he uses in a variety of sizes and shapes.

In his pictures usually no more than three colors are used, which are clearly different and appear in shades from dark to light.

Singier left a large oeuvre of paintings, drawings and graphics. In addition to this work he created tapestries, designed stained glass windows and mosaics and had finished costumes and equipment for the National Theatre in Paris.
