Gustavo Adolfo Espina Salguero

Gustavo Adolfo Espina Salguero (* 1946 in Horcones, Jutiapa ) was from the 1st to June 5, 1993 President of Guatemala.

Life

On January 14, 1991 President Jorge Serrano Elias Antonio Gustavo Adolfo Espina Salguero appointed as his deputy. His predecessor in office of the deputy was Roberto Carpio Nicolle. Jorge Serrano had held the office before the entrepreneur Francois Berger Dorion offered, which it refused to do.

Evacuation of the Plaza Mayor

In June 1992, Serrano was on a trip to Asia and Espina was Executive President. On 15 June 1992, the Finca Cajolá was cleared in the Altiplano of Quetzaltenango of about 500 landless families. Approximately 400 manzanas (280 hectares ), maize milpa, which they had sown were burnt by the security forces. The landless people marched then to demonstrate for a solution to their economic situation walking to Guatemala City. On July 22, 1992 at 17:20 the Plaza Mayor was forcibly evicted on the instructions of Espina by security forces. According to newspaper reports, it was beaten 20 people hospitalized, 60 people were injured by the use of tear gas. The farmer Natalio Gonzalez remained missing. According to the landless 53 people were seriously injured but only 23 ventured into a hospital for fear of reprisals. 15 people were gone. On 23 July 1992 Espina received a delegation of the landless.

Serranazo

May 25, 1993 Serrano announced the state of emergency and staged a coup against the constitutional institutions. He was supported by Espina. As Serrano was induced to resign by the army leadership on June 1 should be Espina president according to the will of the army leadership. The government cabinet, which was, with the exception of García Samayoa and the Interior Minister Francisco Perdomo Sandoval back on June 3. On June 3, 1993 investigation against Serrano, Espina and Perdomo were opened for breach of the constitution, abuse of office and embezzlement. The UNRG guerrillas announced a unilateral ceasefire and the U.S. Congress voted for a resumption of military aid as a sign of good will.

Serrano spent the next two years in Costa Rica in exile. In 1995 he returned to Guatemala, had to spend a night in jail and was released on bail.

On 20 December 1995, it was shot at a vehicle with his two children in the Zona 10, Guatemala City. Because of his involvement in the coup, he had to answer to the court. On 22 July 1997 a court sentenced him to a fine of 7,300 Quetzales corresponding to 16 installments over four years to 500 Quetzales. Since the process Espina operates a clothing and a brokerage company.
