Gustaw Gizewiusz

Martin Hermann Gustav Gisevius, Polish Gustav Herman Marcin Gizewiusz ( born May 21, 1810 in Johannesburg, † May 7, 1848 in Osterode in East Prussia ) was a German pastor and linguist in Mazury.

Life

Gisevius came from an old Masurian family. After graduating from the Royal College Lyck he studied Protestant theology at the Albertus University of Königsberg. In 1828 he became a member of the Corps Masovia.

In 1835 he became pastor at the Polish Church in Osterode. He married a Polish-speaking MASURIN and began to engage in political activities. How many evangelical pastor he wanted the unique heritage of the Masurian preserve: Polish language, Protestantism and loyalty to the crown of Prussia. Gisevius was committed to especially for the preservation of the Polish language in Mazury. With the Przyjaciel ludu Lecki he founded the first secular magazine Masuria. In addition, he edited the Leipzig yearbooks of Slavic literature, art and science.

Awards

With Mrongovius Gisevius was declared posthumously for " activists in the struggle for the Polish character of Masuria ". In honor of Gisevius the city in the former East Prussia Lötzen was renamed in 1946 in Giżycko.
