Gutenstein Alps

The Good Steiner Alps are a mountain range in the eastern Alps. They form the north-eastern part of the Northern Limestone Alps, in the still heights above 1000 m can be achieved. The highest peak is the Reisalpe ( 1399 m).

Topography

The Good Steiner Alps are delimited to the north by the Gölsen and Triestingtal from the Vienna Woods; in the east they hit the Vienna Basin. The delimitation of the Rax -Schneeberg Group in the South is the valley of the brook between Sierning Ternitz and Puchberg am Schneeberg, the saddle at the Mamauwiese and Voisbach and Schwarzatal. By Gutensteiner Alps runs from the saddle transition Wassertal -Seebach to Gerichtsberg the main Alpine ridge along the line Haselstein - Ochsattel - Hegerberg - Cold Kuchl - Yoke type - Unterberg - Kieneck. In Ebenwald, community Kleinzell, is the northernmost mountain in the Alps with an elevation above 1000 m, the Seng Ebenberg (1104 m). On the Hohe Wand can be found with the Bromberg ( 1078 m) and the easternmost Eintausender the Alps.

Geology

The majority of Gutensteiner Alps consists of limestones of the Eastern Alpine ceiling, in particular Gutensteiner lime and dolomite from the lower or middle Triassic. This relatively coarse-grained rocks have almost always a distinct Bankung and partially colored layers. In the southeast and northwest, also conglomerate rock from the Cretaceous period is to be found. After occurrence in this region of the Gutensteiner dolomite got its name. It can be fine - and coarse-grained and contain siliceous or argillaceous components. The gray to brown, usually banked lagoons sediment originated in the Triassic and is related to the non-ferrous dolomite. Its very variable characteristics are common to the west to beyond the Dachstein Mountains beyond.

In the limestone are found numerous caves; of these, the Unicorn Cave in Dreistetten, the iron cave near Brunn at the snow mountain railway and the long hole ( Flatzer stalactite cave ) at Flatz (municipality Ternitz ) are generally accessible.

Communities and landscape

With the exception of Piestingtales (municipalities Good stone, Pernitz, market Piesting ) and the Puchberger basin only the valleys on the edge of Gutensteiner Alps and the plains on the eastern edge are densely populated. Important places are Traisen, grove and field Berne village in the north, Wollersdorf, Neunkirchen and Ternitz to the east and St. Aegyd am Neuwalde and Lilienfeld in the West.

The majority of Gutensteiner Alps is heavily forested and is used for forestry. At higher elevations are found primarily spruce and larch trees at lower altitudes and in dry locations Book pines. The Lilienfeld to the counts of the northwestern part of the Good Steiner Alps, has the largest share of forest area of ​​all districts in Austria.

Tourism

The Good Steiner Alps are an important recreational area for the inhabitants of the regions Vienna, Wiener Neustadt and St. Pölten. Especially the high wall to the east is accessed by a variety of routes, climbing routes and some via ferrata and several mountain guesthouses and shelters. Popular destinations are the Myrafälle and Steinwandklamm ( between Pernitz and Furth ).
