Guy Butler (athlete)

Guy Butler (Guy Montagu Butler, born August 25, 1899 in Harrow, London, † February 22, 1981 in St Neots, Cambridgeshire ) was a British sprinter and Olympic gold medalist.

In 1919 he won the British AAA championships over 440 yards and 1926 more than 220 yards. He also set a world record of 30.6 seconds over 300 yards this year. Through his winning four Olympic medals he holds the record together with Sebastian Coe.

At the Olympic Games in Antwerp in 1920 he won the silver medal in the 400 -meter run behind the South Africans Bevil Rudd ( gold) and ahead of Sweden's Nils Engdahl (bronze). He also won the team gold medal in the 4 x 400 - meter relay, along with his teammates Cecil Griffiths, Robert Lindsay and John Ainsworth - Davis, before the teams from South Africa ( silver ) and France ( bronze). At the Olympic Games in Paris in 1924 Butler won the bronze medal over 400 meters, behind the British Eric Liddell (Gold ) and the American Horatio Fitch ( silver) and the team bronze medal in the 4 x 400 - meter relay, together with his teammates Edward Toms, George Renwick and Richard Ripley, behind the teams from the United States ( gold) and from Sweden (Silver). At the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928, he took up also, but came through a seventh place in the quarter -finals in the 200 -meter run not get out.

After his athletic career, Butler worked as a teacher in a school, then as a sports journalist and was one of the pioneers of film recordings athletes in action.
