Guy Roland Demel ( born June 13, 1981 in Orsay ) is a French- Ivorian football player.

Life

Youth

Guy Demel, who was born in the Paris suburb of Orsay, grew up in Saint Antoine to the north of Marseille, a suburb, which was marked by violence, drugs and an overnight curfew. He later reported by his former friends who were in prison, and that he had with football from the misery of escape.

Professional career

Demel started his professional career in the Ligue 2 for Nîmes Olympique. He then moved to 2000/01 season to the English giants Arsenal FC, where he played for a year but only in the reserve round because he could not prevail because of the great competition.

After this year intermezzo in London, he moved in 2001 to 600,000 Mark in the German Bundesliga to Borussia Dortmund. As before, in London, Demel could not prevail in Dortmund due to strong competition on the right-back and in the center of defense. In the championship season of 2001 /02 Demel has not yet been used in the Bundesliga. In 2002 /03 he played largely in the regional team of the BVB.

Only with the coaching change at the beginning of the season 2004/05 Demel could win a regular place on the right side of defense under coach Bert van Marwijk. Among other things, the HSV on the very versatile man from the Ivory Coast right-back, center-back and as a " vacuum cleaner " before the defense ( central defensive midfielder ) was attentive. Therefore Demel then moved to the 2005/06 season for HSV, where he immediately won a starting place and in the meantime also the right of midfield was used.

31 August 2011 undertook West Ham United, which was previously relegated from the Premier League, Demel. He signed a two-year contract until 30 June 2013 with an option for another year, which he returned after ten years in Germany to England. With West Ham Demel reached in the Football League Championship 2011/12 to third place in the table and celebrated on the play-off round of the promotion to the Premier League.

National

Guy Demel took 2004 to the citizenship of the Ivory Coast, since his parents are from this country. Since then, he is a regular in the squad of the Ivorian national football team, with whom he qualified in South Africa for the 2006 World Cup in Germany and the 2010 World Cup. On 10 February 2006, the Ivory Coast reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations and only lost on penalties against the winner of Egypt. Demel played with in a preliminary round match and in the semifinal at the tournament.

Private

Guy Demel is the uncle of the French football player Jonathan Béhé. Demel has been married since spring 2007. He has two daughters.
