Guy Thys

Guy Thys (December 6, 1922 in Antwerp, † 1 August 2003) was a Belgian football coach.

Guy Thys played twice for his country. In addition to football, he also played like golf and liked to drink whiskey.

As a coach, he was responsible for the following clubs:

  • Cercle Bruges
  • Sporting Lokeren
  • KSK Beveren
  • Royal Antwerp FC

Guy Thys was 1976-1989 coach of the Belgian national football team. Then he took a break of six months and took over the position after Walter Meeuws was released, again to May 1991. He led the national team in 1980 in the final of the European Championship, which they lost 1-2 against Germany.

1982, 1986 and 1990 reached the Red Devils under the direction of Guy Thys to qualify for the World Cup. They had the most success in 1986 with the 4th place in Mexico. In the semifinals, his team lost to Argentina 0-2.

Overall, the national team played under him 114 games. Of these, they won 50 games, 27 times there was a draw, 37 games were lost.
