More details

The processes communicate through the D-Bus with GVFS, which consists of a main system service ( daemon gvfsd ) and other services for different protocols. For file transfers its own binary protocol. Supported network interfaces eg SFTP, FTP, NFS, DAV, SMB, FTP OBEX ( Bluetooth mobile phones ) as well as from version 1.15.2 MTP (smartphones, digital cameras, MP3 players, etc. ). Credentials can be used widely session with gvfs, so they do not need to be specified each time they used application. Since version includes GNOME 2.22.0 gvfs.

GVFS using a separate interface, rather than defining a general POSIX interface for communication between the virtual file system and the application and use. Gvfs is alone on GIO, its programming interface is documented, usable.
